Wild Yam Side Effects

Very few side effects of wild yam have been reported. This could be because not many studies have been conducted on this supplement; it does not mean that side effects are not possible. Although side effects are uncommon, allergic reactions could occur with this product. You should report any signs of an allergic reaction (such as itching or hives) to your healthcare provider.

Does Wild Yam Cause Side Effects?

Even though it is a natural product, wild yam may cause side effects. People often assume that natural products are always safe and free of side effects. However, this is simply not the case. It is reasonable to assume that any natural product with the capability to have medicinal properties may also have side effects.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with wild yam. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of wild yam side effects with you.)

Possible Side Effects of Wild Yam

In general, wild yam does not appear to be likely to cause side effects. However, it is quite possible that this simply reflects the fact that wild yam supplementation has been studied very little in humans; it may not necessarily indicate that wild yam is truly unlikely to cause side effects.
It has been reported that taking a very large amount of wild yam may cause vomiting. Also, theoretically, allergic reactions may be possible. Signs of an allergic reaction (which should be reported to your healthcare provider) include:
  • An unexplained rash
  • Hives
  • Itching
  • Swelling of the mouth, lips, tongue, or throat
  • Wheezing or other difficulty breathing.
Theoretically, wild yam may increase the risk of blood clots in certain individuals who are predisposed to such problems. It may also theoretically aggravate some hormonally-sensitive conditions (such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis, or certain cancers).
