There are many different kinds of wild yams. Some are edible, while others are used medicinally as an herbal remedy. Wild yam is often promoted as a natural alternative to hormone replacement therapy for menopause or other uses. Some people also believe that there is a link between fertility and wild yam.
There is little high-quality evidence to show that wild yam really works for most uses. As is often the case with herbal supplements, some of the more outlandish claims about the health benefits of wild yam should be viewed with skepticism (or, at the very least, with caution) until more research is available.
