Wild Yam and Breastfeeding

Since no research has been conducted on breastfeeding and wild yam, it is not clear if the supplement is safe or whether it will affect a nursing mother or her child. Some sources suggest that the product is compatible with breastfeeding, but there is not enough evidence to support such claims. Before taking wild yam, women who are nursing should first talk to their healthcare providers.

Is Wild Yam Safe While Breastfeeding?

Because it is not clear if wild yam is safe for use while nursing, it would be a good idea to check with your healthcare provider before taking wild yam if you are breastfeeding.

No research has been done to see if this supplement is safe for breastfeeding women or their infants. It is not known how wild yam might affect a breastfeeding women or her child. Some sources suggest that wild yam is beneficial for nursing mothers, but there is no real evidence to back up such claims.

Breastfeeding often limits the prescription and non-prescription drugs that are available for a woman to take. As a result, women often seek safe alternatives, sometimes assuming that herbal supplements are always safe. This is simply not the case. Herbal supplements can be marketed in the United States without any evidence that they are safe (or even effective) for anyone, including breastfeeding women. It should never be assumed that natural products are automatically safe.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should talk with your healthcare provider about breastfeeding while taking wild yam. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, you and your healthcare provider can make a shared decision about breastfeeding and wild yam that is right for you.
