What Is Vivelle-Dot Used For?
Vivelle-Dot® (estradiol patch) is a prescription medication that contains an estrogen hormone in a skin patch. It is approved for the following uses:
- Prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women at significant risk for osteoporosis
- Treatment of menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal irritation or dryness
- Treatment of estrogen deficiency in younger women whose ovaries do not produce enough estrogen (or who have had their ovaries surgically removed).
Vivelle-Dot is the smallest estrogen patch currently available.
Vivelle-Dot Use for Preventing Osteoporosis
Because estrogen helps to keep the bones strong, the decrease in estrogen during
menopause causes a significant weakening of the bones, often resulting in osteoporosis. By providing estrogen, Vivelle-Dot can help prevent these menopause-related bone changes. However, Vivelle-Dot is not risk-free. It should only be used in women who are at significant risk for osteoporosis and only after other, non-hormonal
osteoporosis medications have been seriously considered. It is important to get enough
calcium and vitamin D while taking Vivelle-Dot for this purpose.
