Vivelle-Dot Uses

Vivelle-Dot is used for treating menopause symptoms, such as vaginal irritation or dryness, night sweats, and hot flashes. It is also approved to prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and to treat hormone deficiency in younger women whose ovaries do not produce enough estrogen. There are currently no legitimate off-label Vivelle-Dot uses, and the medication is not approved for use in children or teens.

 

What Is Vivelle-Dot Used For?

Vivelle-Dot® (estradiol patch) is a prescription medication that contains an estrogen hormone in a skin patch. It is approved for the following uses:
 
  • Prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women at significant risk for osteoporosis
  • Treatment of menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal irritation or dryness
  • Treatment of estrogen deficiency in younger women whose ovaries do not produce enough estrogen (or who have had their ovaries surgically removed).
     
Vivelle-Dot is the smallest estrogen patch currently available.
 

Vivelle-Dot Use for Preventing Osteoporosis

Because estrogen helps to keep the bones strong, the decrease in estrogen during menopause causes a significant weakening of the bones, often resulting in osteoporosis. By providing estrogen, Vivelle-Dot can help prevent these menopause-related bone changes. However, Vivelle-Dot is not risk-free. It should only be used in women who are at significant risk for osteoporosis and only after other, non-hormonal osteoporosis medications have been seriously considered. It is important to get enough calcium and vitamin D while taking Vivelle-Dot for this purpose.
