Vivelle-Dot and Breastfeeding

Before using Vivelle-Dot, breastfeeding women should talk to their healthcare providers about the potential risks. Although the hormone in the medication passes through breast milk, the amounts are probably too low to cause any significant problems in a nursing child. The main concern regarding Vivelle-Dot and breastfeeding is that the hormone can decrease both the quantity and quality of breast milk.

 

Can I Use Vivelle-Dot While Breastfeeding?

Vivelle-Dot® (estradiol patch) is a prescription hormone replacement medication. As an estrogen medication, it is not recommended for breastfeeding women. Therefore, make sure to check with your healthcare provider before taking Vivelle-Dot if you are breastfeeding.
 

Problems With Vivelle-Dot and Breastfeeding

Estradiol, the hormone in Vivelle-Dot, passes through breast milk. However, it passes through breast milk in amounts that are probably too low to cause significant or long-lasting problems in breastfeeding infants.
 
Of greater concern, estrogen medications can decrease the quantity and quality of breast milk. It is for this reason that estrogen-containing medications (including Vivelle-Dot) are usually not recommended for women who are breastfeeding.
