Generic Prometrium

Although patents for brand-name Prometrium have expired, no generic Prometrium is currently available in the United States. You may come across companies on the Internet that claim to sell a generic version of the drug, but there is no way of knowing if you are getting genuine Prometrium. You should not buy anything claiming to be generic Prometrium until an approved generic version is available.

 

Generic Prometrium: An Overview

Prometrium® (progesterone capsules) is a hormone replacement therapy medication that is approved for the following uses:
 
  • Causing a period in premenopausal women with absent menstrual periods (secondary amenorrhea)
  • Preventing abnormal overgrowth of the lining of the uterus (endometrial hyperplasia) in postmenopausal women taking estrogen hormone therapy.
     
Prometrium is made by Solvay Pharmaceuticals. Although the patents for the medication have expired, no generic versions have been approved in the United States. Yet, if you search the Internet for "generic Prometrium," you may find a number of companies selling it. These medicines may be fake, substandard, and potentially dangerous. Generic versions may be available from another country, but there is really no way of knowing if you are getting genuine Prometrium or not. You should not buy any generic Prometrium until an approved generic version is available.
 

Why Isn't Generic Prometrium Available?

It is not entirely clear why there are no generic versions of Prometrium. There are no unexpired patents for this medication, so it is difficult to predict when a generic version may become available. Generic Prometrium may never be available. At this point, it is not expected to become available in the immediate future.
