Prempro Uses for Osteoporosis
Because estrogen helps keep the bones strong, the decrease in estrogen during
menopause causes a significant weakening of the bones, often resulting in
osteoporosis. By providing estrogen,
Prempro can help prevent these menopause-related bone changes. However, the drug is not risk-free, and it should only be used in women who cannot use other, non-hormonal medications for
osteoporosis prevention and who have a significant risk for osteoporosis.
Prempro Uses in Children and Teens
Prempro is not approved for use in children for any use.
On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Prempro for something other than the conditions discussed in this article. This is called an "
off-label" use. At one point, Prempro (like other hormone therapies) was used off-label for
preventing heart disease and forms of
dementia (such as with
Alzheimer's disease), but these are no longer considered legitimate off-label uses.
Sometimes hormones are used to promote youthfulness. Again, this is not generally accepted as a legitimate off-label Prempro use.
