Prempro and Breastfeeding
Studies on Prempro and breastfeeding have shown that the hormones in this medication do pass through breast milk. Although these hormones pass through breast milk in low amounts, they may still decrease the quality and quantity of breast milk. Therefore, women are typically advised to avoid taking Prempro and breastfeeding at the same time.
Can I Take Prempro While Breastfeeding?Prempro™ (conjugated estrogens/medroxyprogesterone) is a prescription medication approved to treat menopause symptoms and to prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. The hormones in the drug pass through breast milk and may decrease its quality and quantity. Therefore, check with your healthcare provider before taking Prempro if you are breastfeeding.
Prempro and Breastfeeding: What Does the Research Say?Studies have shown that the estrogen and progestin hormones in Prempro pass through breast milk in low amounts. These amounts are probably too low to cause significant or long-lasting problems in nursing infants.
More importantly, the estrogen hormones in Prempro may decrease the production and quality of breast milk. It is for this reason that estrogen-containing medications (including Prempro and many birth control pills) are not usually recommended for women who are breastfeeding.
