Premphase Uses for Osteoporosis
Because estrogen helps keep the bones strong, the decrease in estrogen during
menopause causes a significant weakening of the bones, often resulting in
osteoporosis. By providing estrogen,
Premphase can help prevent these menopause-related bone changes. However, the drug is not risk-free and it should only be used in women who cannot take other non-hormonal medications for
osteoporosis prevention and who are at significant risk for osteoporosis.
Premphase Uses in Children and Teens
Premphase is not approved for use in children for any reason.
On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Premphase for something other than the conditions listed in this article. This is called an "
off-label" use. At one point, Premphase (like other hormone therapies) was used off-label for
preventing heart disease and
dementia (such as with
Alzheimer's disease), but these are no longer considered legitimate off-label uses.
Sometimes hormones are used to promote youthfulness. Again, this is not generally accepted as a legitimate off-label Premphase use.
