Premarin Vaginal Cream Uses
Premarin Vaginal Cream is used for treating vaginal inflammation that occurs as the result of low estrogen levels after menopause. Specifically, Premarin Vaginal Cream uses include treating vaginal dryness, burning, and itching. The cream is ideal for women whose primary menopause symptoms are vaginal, as using the cream instead of taking the hormones by mouth exposes the body to less of the hormones.

Premarin® Vaginal Cream (conjugated estrogens vaginal cream) is a prescription hormone replacement medication that contains a mixture of natural estrogens. It does not, however, contain any progesterone hormones. Premarin Vaginal Cream is approved to treat vaginal inflammation caused by thinning of the vaginal tissues, usually the result of low estrogen levels after menopause.
Menopause is a normal change in a woman's life when she stops having her period. That's why some people call menopause "the change of life." A woman has reached menopause when she has not had a period for 12 months in a row and there are no other causes for this change. Menopause symptoms can affect the entire body, including the vagina. Vaginal menopause symptoms include:
- Dryness
- Burning or other pain
- Itching.
These symptoms occur due to low estrogen levels after menopause. Because Premarin Vaginal Cream helps to replace some of the estrogen lost during menopause, it not only helps to relieve these vaginal symptoms, but can also reduce vaginal thinning that occurs.
When used to treat menopause, Premarin Vaginal Cream should be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest period necessary. The cream is ideal for women whose primary menopause symptoms are vaginal, as using the cream instead of taking the hormones by mouth exposes the body to less of the hormones. However, a significant amount of the estrogens in Premarin Vaginal Cream are absorbed into the bloodstream, and it is expected that many of the problems seen with oral hormone replacement therapy also apply to vaginal hormone replacement therapy (see Premarin Vaginal Cream Warnings and Precautions).
