Does Prescription Pregnenolone Work?

Although pregnenolone is available as a dietary supplement without a prescription, your healthcare provider may recommend a prescription "bioidentical" compounded pregnenolone. Just because your pregnenolone was obtained with a prescription from a pharmacy, it does not mean that it is an FDA-approved medication. Pregnenolone (in any form) has not been approved by the FDA; instead, it is regulated as a dietary supplement. There is no more evidence to support the use of prescription compounded pregnenolone compared to non-prescription dietary supplements.

Final Thoughts on Pregnenolone Effectiveness

There is no reliable human evidence to suggest that pregnenolone supplementation really works (or is safe) for any purpose. It is important to remember that pregnenolone is classified as a supplement (not a drug) and is, therefore, less strictly regulated than drugs. This means that it can be marketed without being shown to be safe or effective. Because pregnenolone is a hormone capable of affecting various other hormones in the body, it is a good idea to check with your healthcare provider prior to taking it.
