Osphena Side Effects

If you are taking Osphena and develop unusual vaginal bleeding, sharp chest pain, or vision changes, contact your healthcare provider right away. Potentially serious problems can occur with this prescription drug, so it is important to know which reactions require urgent medical treatment. Other possible side effects of Osphena include hot flushes, vaginal discharge, and excessive sweating.

An Introduction to Osphena Side Effects

As with any medicine, Osphena™ (ospemifene) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, most women tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Osphena. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects of Osphena

Osphena has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking the drug were documented and then compared to those that occurred in a similar group of people taking a placebo (a "sugar pill" with no active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared with the placebo.
In these studies, the most common Osphena side effects included:
  • Hot flushes -- in up to 7.5 percent of women
  • Vaginal discharge -- up to 3.8 percent
  • Muscle spasms -- up to 3.2 percent
  • Excessive sweating -- up to 1.6 percent.
