Menopause Home > Wild Yam for Hot Flashes

Wild yam is often promoted as a natural alternative to hormone replacement therapy for menopause or other uses. It comes in several forms -- some are eaten, while others are used medicinally.

While wild yam does not appear to have progesterone-like properties, it does seem to have estrogenic (estrogen-like) properties. It is often claimed that hot flashes can be treated with wild yam, but there is no real evidence that the supplement really works for any particular use at this time. In fact, one study of wild yam cream for menopause symptoms (hot flashes and night sweats) showed that it was not any better than a placebo.
