Studies on Premphase and breastfeeding have shown that the hormones in this medication do pass through breast milk in low amounts. While these amounts are too low to cause significant problems in a nursing infant, the drug may decrease the quantity and quality of breast milk. However, because each woman's situation is different, talk to your healthcare provider about Premphase and breastfeeding.
Can I Take Premphase While Breastfeeding?Premphase® (conjugated estrogens/cyclic medroxyprogesterone) is a prescription hormone replacement medication approved for menopause treatment and for osteoporosis prevention in postmenopausal women. The estrogen hormones in Premphase do pass through breast milk and may decrease the its quality and quantity. Therefore, the drug is usually not recommended for women who are breastfeeding.
Premphase and Breastfeeding: What Does the Research Say?As mentioned, the estrogen hormones in Premphase may decrease the production and quality of breast milk. It is for this reason that estrogen-containing medications (including Premphase and many birth control pills) are not usually recommended for women who are breastfeeding.
Studies have also shown that the estrogen and progestin hormones in Premphase pass through breast milk in low amounts. However, these amounts are probably too low to cause significant or long-lasting problems in nursing infants.
