Several menopausal symptoms can be treated with Femring. Uses of this prescription hormone replacement medication include the treatment of hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal symptoms (such as burning, dryness, and itching). Femring should only be used for the shortest time necessary. It is not approved for use in children or teens, and there are currently no off-label Femring uses.
What Is Femring Used For?Femring® (estradiol vaginal ring) is a prescription hormone replacement therapy medication. It comes in the form of a small, flexible ring that is inserted vaginally and left in place for 90 days. Femring is approved to treat specific menopause symptoms.
Femring contains estradiol, which is a natural human hormone and is the primary estrogen hormone in premenopausal women. Femring does not contain any progesterone hormones.
Using Femring for Menopause SymptomsMenopause is a normal change in a woman's life when she stops having her period. That's why some people call menopause "the change of life." A woman has reached menopause when she has not had a period for 12 months in a row and there are no other causes for this change.
Femring is approved to treat vasomotor menopause symptoms (hot flashes and night sweats) and vaginal menopause symptoms, such as:
- Burning or other pain
These symptoms occur due to low estradiol levels after menopause. Even though Femring is used vaginally, the hormone in it is readily absorbed through the vaginal tissues and is absorbed into the bloodstream, which is why Femring is effective for hot flashes and night sweats.
For menopause treatment, Femring should be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest period necessary.
