Menopause Home > Generic Estratest

It is difficult to say whether there are currently any generic Estratest products available. Since Estratest has never been approved by the FDA, which is responsible for determining which drugs are equivalent to each other, it is impossible to determine if other medications are the same as Estratest. Medicines that are sometimes considered "generic Estratest" products include EEMT and Covaryx.

Generic Estratest: An Overview

Estratest® (esterified estrogens/methyltestosterone) is a mixture of estrogens along with a testosterone hormone. It is used for treating menopause symptoms.
Estratest is made by Solvay Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Although other medications are available that contain the same active ingredients in the same doses, it is not clear whether such medications can be considered generic versions of Estratest.

Problems With Generic Estratest

Estratest has never been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). As a result, it is technically impossible to determine whether any medication (generic or otherwise) is equivalent to Estratest. The FDA is responsible for determining which medications are equivalent to each other. Medications that may sometimes be considered generic for Estratest include:
Your pharmacist may or may not consider these medications equivalent to Estratest, based on his or her professional opinion and any applicable state laws concerning generic substitution.

Is "Esterified Estrogens and Methyltestosterone" the Same as Generic Estratest?

No -- esterified estrogens and methyltestosterone are the active ingredients in Estratest (as well as in various other products), not a generic version of the medicine. What can be confusing is that, oftentimes, the active ingredient of any drug is referred to as the "generic name." The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
