Menopause Home > Elestrin Uses

Elestrin is used for treating moderate to severe menopause symptoms, such as hot flashes and night sweats. It helps to relieve vasomotor symptoms by replacing the estrogen hormone that the ovaries no longer produce in menopausal women. Occasionally, the medication can also be used off-label for other conditions. Off-label Elestrin uses may include the treatment of menopause symptoms other than night sweats or hot flashes.

What Is Elestrin Used For?

Elestrin™ (estradiol gel) is a prescription medication that contains an estrogen hormone in a gel that is applied to the skin of the upper arm and shoulder. It is approved for treating certain menopausal symptoms, specifically hot flashes and night sweats.
For some women, the symptoms of menopause are quite severe, and some form of menopause relief may be necessary. This may include medications, natural menopause relief remedies, or non-medical ways to deal with the symptoms.
Although there are many different types of menopause symptoms, Elestrin is approved to treat only vasomotor symptoms, which are symptoms such as hot flashes or night sweats. Although it has not been studied (or approved) to treat other menopause symptoms, Elestrin is probably effective for other symptoms as well.
For menopause treatment, Elestrin should be used for the shortest period necessary.

Elestrin Use in Children and Teens

Elestrin is not approved for use in children or teens, as it has not been studied in these age groups. Discuss the risks and benefits of using Elestrin with your child's healthcare provider.

Off-Label Elestrin Uses

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Elestrin for something other than the conditions listed above. This is called an "off-label" use. At one point, hormone replacement therapy was used off-label for preventing heart disease and dementia (such as Alzheimer's disease), but these are no longer considered legitimate off-label uses. Sometimes hormones are used to promote youthfulness. Again, this is not generally accepted as a legitimate off-label Elestrin use.
Using Elestrin to treat menopause symptoms other than night sweats or hot flashes is an off-label use of the drug.
