Evamist Generic: An Overview

Evamist® (estradiol transdermal spray) is a prescription estrogen hormone replacement medication. It is approved for treating hot flashes and night sweats due to menopause.

Evamist is manufactured by Ther-Rx Corporation, a division of KV Pharmaceutical Company. Evamist is not currently available in generic form.

When Will Generic Evamist Be Available?

The first patents for Evamist expire in February 2017. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version of Evamist could become available. However, there are other circumstances that could come up to extend or shorten the exclusivity period of Evamist. This could include such things as lawsuits or patents for specific Evamist uses. Once the exclusivity period for Evamist expires, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Evamist drug.

Is Estradiol a Generic Evamist?

No -- estradiol is the active ingredient in Evamist (as well as numerous other medications), but it is not a generic version of Evamist. What can be confusing is that, oftentimes, the active ingredient of a drug is referred to as the "generic name." The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off patent, and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
