What Is Estropipate Vaginal Cream Used For?

Estropipate vaginal cream is used for treating vaginal-related menopause symptoms, such as dryness, itching, and burning in and around the vagina. By replacing some of the estrogen lost during menopause, the medication helps relieve vaginal symptoms and also reduces the thinning of vaginal tissues. There are currently no universally accepted off-label estropipate vaginal cream uses.

What Is Estropipate Vaginal Cream Used For? -- An Overview

Estropipate vaginal cream (Ogen® Vaginal Cream) is a prescription hormone replacement therapy medication. It is approved to treat vaginal inflammation and thinning of the vaginal tissues, usually caused by low estrogen levels after menopause. It does not contain any progesterone hormones.

Using Estropipate Vaginal Cream for Menopause Symptoms

Menopause symptoms can affect the entire body, including the vagina. Vaginal menopause symptoms are usually related to thinning of the vaginal tissues and may include:

  • Dryness
  • Pain or burning
  • Itching.

These symptoms occur due to low estrogen levels after menopause. Because estropipate vaginal cream helps replace some of the estrogen lost during menopause, it not only helps relieve vaginal symptoms, but can also reduce the thinning of vaginal tissues.

For menopause treatment, estropipate vaginal cream should be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest period necessary. The medication is ideal for women whose main menopause symptoms are vaginal in nature, since using the cream instead of taking the hormones by mouth exposes the body to a lower dose of the hormones. However, it should be made clear that a significant amount of the estropipate in estropipate vaginal cream is absorbed into the bloodstream, and it is expected that many of the problems seen with oral hormone replacement therapy also apply to vaginal hormone replacement therapy (see Precautions and Warnings With Estropipate Vaginal Cream).
