EstroGel Side Effects

Headaches, breast pain, and vaginal infections are some of the most common side effects that have been reported with EstroGel. Side effects of this medication tend to be minor, but it is possible to develop serious problems that may require medical attention. Some of the rare but serious side effects of EstroGel that should be reported to your healthcare provider immediately include blood clots, depression, and dementia.

An Introduction to EstroGel Side Effects

As with any medicine, EstroGel® (estradiol gel) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes EstroGel will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Common Side Effects of EstroGel

EstroGel has been thoroughly studied in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking the drug were documented and then compared to the side effects that occurred in another group of people taking a placebo (a "sugar pill" that does not contain any active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the group not taking the medicine.
In these studies, the most common EstroGel side effects included:
  • Headaches -- in up to 20.2 percent of women
  • Infections -- up to 17.3 percent
  • Breast pain -- up to 12.5 percent
  • Vaginal irritation or infection -- up to 8.9 percent
  • Abdominal pain (stomach pain) -- up to 7.7 percent
  • Pain (such as general aches and pain) -- up to 7.1 percent
  • Gas -- up to 6.5 percent.
Other common side effects of EstroGel (occurring in 1 to 6 percent of women) included:
