EstroGel Drug Interactions

Several medications can negatively interact with EstroGel. Drug interactions may occur if EstroGel is taken with medications such as seizure medicines, barbiturates, and various antibiotics or antifungals. Some of these drug interactions with EstroGel could alter the level of the medications in your blood, which can increase your risk for developing side effects or decrease the effectiveness of the medications.

 

An Introduction to EstroGel Drug Interactions

EstroGel® (estradiol gel) has the potential to interact with numerous other medications. Some of the medicines that may lead to EstroGel interactions include:
 
  • A few seizure medications, including:

 

 

  • Barbiturates, including (but not limited to):

 

    • Butalbital (Fioricet®, Fiorinal®)
    • Pentobarbital (Nembutal®)
    • Phenobarbital (Luminal®)
    • Secobarbital (Seconal®)

 

  • Cyclosporine (Gengraf®, Neoral®, Sandimmune®)
     
  • Protease inhibitor HIV medications, such as:

 

 

  • Rifamycin antibiotics, including rifabutin (Mycobutin®), rifampin (Rifadin®), and rifapentine (Priftin®)
     
  • St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum), an herbal supplement
     
  • Thyroid replacement medications, including:

 

 

  • Various antifungal medications or antibiotics, such as:

 

    • Clarithromycin (Biaxin®)
    • Erythromycin (Ery-Tab®)
    • Isoniazid (Nydrazid®)
    • Itraconazole (Sporanox®)
    • Ketoconazole (Nizoral®)
    • Miconazole
    • Telithromycin (Ketek®).
