Estring

Estring is used to relieve vaginal and urinary problems caused by menopause. Specifically, it is approved to treat dryness, itching, and burning in and around the vagina and painful or urgent urination. This prescription medication replaces the estrogen that the ovaries no longer produce. The medication comes as a flexible ring that is inserted vaginally every 90 days. Potential side effects include headaches, back pain, and vaginal yeast infections.

What Is Estring?

Estring® (estradiol vaginal ring) is a prescription medication that contains an estrogen hormone. It is used to treat the following menopausal symptoms:
 
  • Irritation, dryness, itching, and burning in and around the vagina
  • Painful or urgent urination.
     
Estring is a flexible ring that is inserted vaginally and left in place for up to 90 days.

How Does It Work?

Estring contains estradiol, the main estrogen hormone produced by the ovaries before menopause. It helps to relieve menopausal symptoms by replacing the estradiol that the ovaries no longer produce. It is a good alternative to hormone replacement therapy taken by mouth, especially in women who only have vaginal or urinary menopausal symptoms.
