Estring Drug Interactions

It is important that your healthcare provider be aware of any other medications you are taking before starting treatment with Estring. Drug interactions may occur if Estring is combined with certain medications, such as barbiturates, some antibiotics, and cyclosporine. Some of these drug interactions with Estring could cause your body to metabolize the medications differently than intended, possibly increasing your risk of side effects or other problems.

 

An Overview of Estring Drug Interactions

Estring® (estradiol vaginal ring) can potentially interact with several medicines. Although no drug-interaction studies have been done with Estring, it is assumed that any of the usual estrogen medication interactions may also occur with Estring. Some of the medicines that may lead to Estring drug interactions include:
 
  • Barbiturates, such as:
 
    • Butalbital (Fioricet®, Fiorinal®)
    • Pentobarbital (Nembutal®)
    • Phenobarbital (Luminal®)
 
  • Certain antifungals or antibiotics, such as:
 
    • Clarithromycin (Biaxin®)
    • Erythromycin (Ery-Tab®)
    • Isoniazid (Nydrazid®)
    • Itraconazole (Sporanox®)
    • Ketoconazole (Nizoral®)
    • Miconazole
    • Telithromycin (Ketek®)
 
  • Cyclosporine (Gengraf®, Neoral®, Sandimmune®)
  • Protease inhibitors, such as:
 
 
  • Rifamycin antibiotics, including rifabutin (Mycobutin®), rifampin (Rifadin®), and rifapentine (Priftin®)
  • Some seizure medications, such as:
