Elestrin Warnings and Precautions

Prior to using Elestrin, warnings and precautions for the drug should be discussed with your healthcare provider. You should also tell him or her about all other medical conditions you have, including high blood pressure, endometriosis, diabetes, or asthma. Elestrin is not suitable for everyone; you should not use Elestrin if you have liver disease, a history of breast cancer, or undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding.

 

Elestrin: What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?

You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to using Elestrin™ (estradiol gel) if you have:
 
  • Cancer (or if you have had cancer in the past)
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Heart disease or heart problems of any kind
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Had a heart attack or stroke
  • Had a blood clot
  • Diabetes
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE, or lupus)
  • Had yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin (jaundice) during a prior pregnancy or estrogen use
  • Kidney disease, including kidney failure (renal failure)
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Asthma
  • Porphyria (a condition involving problems with certain enzymes in the body)
  • Seizures or epilepsy
  • High cholesterol or high triglycerides
  • Migraines
  • Hepatic hemangioma (a kind of liver tumor)
  • Liver disease, such as liver failure, cirrhosis, hepatitis, or liver tumors
  • An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
  • Endometriosis
  • Any allergies, including allergies to drugs, foods, preservatives, or dyes.
     
Also, let your healthcare provider know if you:
 
  • Smoke cigarettes
  • Have an upcoming surgery
  • Are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding.
     
Make sure to tell your healthcare provider about any other medicines you are taking, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
