Elestrin Drug Interactions

If you take any seizure medications, barbiturates, or antifungal drugs while using Elestrin, drug interactions may occur. These interactions could reduce the effectiveness of Elestrin or increase your risk of developing side effects. Other medicines that can lead to Elestrin interactions include rifamycin antibiotics, hypothyroidism medications, St. John's wort, and cyclosporine.

 

An Introduction to Elestrin Drug Interactions

Elestrin™ (estradiol gel) has the potential to interact with numerous other medications. Some of the medicines that may lead to Elestrin interactions include:
 
  • Barbiturate medications, including (but not limited to):

 

    • Butalbital (Fioricet®, Fiorinal®)
    • Pentobarbital (Nembutal®)
    • Phenobarbital (Luminal®)

 

  • Cyclosporine (Gengraf®, Neoral®, Sandimmune®)
     
  • Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) medications, including:

 

 

  • Protease inhibitor HIV medications, such as:

 

 

  • Rifamycin antibiotics, including rifabutin (Mycobutin®), rifampin (Rifadin®), and rifapentine (Priftin®)
     
  • Some seizure medications, including:

 

 

  • St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum), an herbal supplement
     
  • Various antifungal medications or antibiotics, such as:

 

    • Clarithromycin (Biaxin®)
    • Erythromycin (Ery-Tab®)
    • Isoniazid (Nydrazid®)
    • Itraconazole (Sporanox®)
    • Ketoconazole (Nizoral®)
    • Miconazole
    • Telithromycin (Ketek®).
