DIM Side Effects

There are currently no known DIM side effects. This does not mean that side effects are not possible, it simply means that no side effects were reported in clinical studies or case reports. If you develop any side effects of DIM (or any problems that may be related to the supplement), be sure to notify your healthcare provider.

Does DIM Cause Side Effects?

DIM (diindolylmethane) is a compound naturally formed in the body when cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli and cauliflower) are digested in the human stomach. It is also available as a dietary supplement. At this time, there are no known side effects of DIM. However, this does not guarantee that DIM does not cause side effects; it simply means that no DIM side effects have been reported, either in clinical studies or in case reports.

Case reports are individual reports from healthcare providers about side effects seen in their patients. Most likely, the lack of reported DIM side effects reflects a lack of studies large enough to find side effects (or a lack of studies that were designed to look for side effects); it probably does not indicate that DIM really is free of side effects.

Just because DIM is a natural product of cruciferous vegetable digestion does not mean that it is safe or free of side effects. Taking DIM alone (without the other components formed during cruciferous vegetable digestion) could change the effects of DIM, as might taking more DIM than would normally be consumed through food.

Make sure to tell your healthcare provider if you develop any side effects that you think may be related to DIM. You should also let your healthcare provider know if you develop something that "just does not seem right" during treatment with DIM. While it may not be a side effect of DIM, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
