Even though it is a
dietary supplement,
DIM (
diindolylmethane) can potentially interact with medications. Little information is available about DIM interactions, however. Early research suggests that DIM may affect several different liver enzymes. These enzymes are responsible for breaking down many different medications, hormones, toxins, and various other substances in the body. However, since so little information is available, it is not known which medications might interact with DIM or exactly how to handle these interactions.
If you take any prescription medications, check with your healthcare provider before taking DIM. This is especially important for life-saving medications (such as
HIV medications), medications with dangerous side effects (such as arrhythmia medications), or those for which effectiveness is very important (such as
birth control pills). In all cases, don't forget to mention DIM when your healthcare provider asks about the medications and supplements you take.
