Depo-Estradiol and Breastfeeding

If you are using Depo-Estradiol (estradiol cypionate) and breastfeeding, it is important to know that the hormone in the medication does pass through breast milk. Although this amount is probably too low to cause any significant problems in a breastfed infant, it can decrease the quality and quantity of the breast milk. Before using Depo-Estradiol, breastfeeding women should talk to their healthcare provider about the potential risks.

Can I Use Depo-Estradiol While Breastfeeding?

Depo®-Estradiol (estradiol cypionate) is a prescription hormone replacement medication. As an estrogen medication, Depo-Estradiol is not recommended for women who are breastfeeding. Therefore, make sure to check with your healthcare provider before taking Depo-Estradiol if you are breastfeeding (or planning to start breastfeeding).

Effects of Depo-Estradiol on Breastfeeding

Estradiol, the hormone in Depo-Estradiol, passes through breast milk in humans. However, it passes through breast milk in amounts that are probably too low to cause significant or long-lasting problems in nursing infants.

Of greater concern, estrogen medications often decrease the production and quality of breast milk. It is for this reason that estrogen-containing medications (including Depo-Estradiol) are not usually recommended for women who are breastfeeding.
