CombiPatch Side Effects

Painful menstrual cramps, headaches, and breast pain are the most common side effects reported with CombiPatch. Side effects that have also been reported in 5 to 14 percent of women using the drug include nausea, insomnia, and acne. While most side effects of CombiPatch are minor, some are potentially serious and require immediate medical attention, including migraines, heavy vaginal bleeding, and breast lumps.

An Introduction to CombiPatch Side Effects

As with any medicine, CombiPatch® (estradiol/norethindrone patch) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with CombiPatch. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of CombiPatch side effects with you.)

Common Side Effects of CombiPatch

CombiPatch has been thoroughly studied in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking the drug were documented and then compared to the side effects that occurred in another group of people taking a placebo (a patch that does not contain any active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the group not taking the medicine.
In these studies, the most common CombiPatch side effects included:
  • Breast pain -- in up to 48 percent of women
  • Painful menstrual cramps -- up to 31 percent
