Climara Side Effects

Breast pain, upper respiratory tract infections, and headaches are the most common side effects reported with Climara. Side effects of the medication are minor in most cases and usually do not require medical attention, but serious side effects are possible. Rare but serious side effects of Climara that should be reported to a healthcare provider immediately include allergic reactions, sudden vision loss, and chest pain.

An Introduction to Climara Side Effects

As with any medicine, Climara® (estradiol patch) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medicine will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Common Side Effects of Climara

Climara has been thoroughly studied in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking the drug were documented and then compared to the side effects that occurred in another group of people taking a placebo (a patch that does not contain any active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the group not taking the medicine.

In these studies, the most common Climara side effects included:

  • Breast pain -- in up to 29 percent of women
  • Headaches -- up to 18 percent
  • Upper respiratory tract infections (such as the common cold) -- up to 17 percent
  • Abdominal pain (stomach pain) -- up to 16 percent
  • Swelling or water retention -- up to 13 percent
  • Pain -- up to 11 percent.
  •
Other common Climara side effects (occurring in 5 to 10 percent of people) included:
