Cenestin Side Effects

While most women do not experience any problems with Cenestin, side effects can occur. Clinical studies have shown that some of the most common side effects of Cenestin include breast pain, stomach pain, and infections. Cenestin can also cause serious side effects. Contact your healthcare provider right away if you develop serious Cenestin side effects, such as chest pain, vision changes, or migraines.

An Introduction to Cenestin Side Effects

As with any medicine, Cenestin® (conjugated estrogens) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes Cenestin will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Common Side Effects of Cenestin

Cenestin has been thoroughly studied in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking the drug were documented and then compared to the side effects that occurred in another group of people taking a placebo (a "sugar pill" that does not contain any active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the group not taking the medicine.

In these studies, the most common Cenestin side effects included:

  • Breast pain -- in up to 29 percent of women
  • Abdominal pain (stomach pain) -- up to 28 percent
  • Infections -- up to 14 percent
  • Irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting -- up to 14 percent
  • Upper respiratory tract infections (such as the common cold) -- up to 13.2 percent
  • Pain -- up to 11.3 percent.

Other common Cenestin side effects, occurring in 5 to 10 percent of women included:

  • Leg cramps
  • Nausea
  • Unusual sensations, such as burning or tingling
  • Vaginal irritation or infection
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Muscle tenseness
